Classes Offered

Amblard Leather Atelier offers a 1-year program consisting of beginner, intermediate, advanced and master level leather working classes. If you are unsure you would like to commit to the program we offer a drop in evening class every Tuesday.

The 1-year program consists of the beginner, intermediate, advanced, and master level courses. Each class meets eight hours a day, once a week for a 12-week session. Classes are limited to no more than 7 students.  

Tuesday evening drop-in classes are from 6:00 P.M. until 8:00 P.M. If you are interested in signing up for the class, please registrar no later than the Monday before you would like to take the class by 6pm.

Materials and Tools

When you sign up for any classes with Amblard Leather Atelier all materials and tools you need to complete projects are provided. All you need is your creativity & enthusiasm.

All materials are included - pattern paper, leather, cardboard, foam, etc.

All tools are included - ruler, straight edge, cutting knife, glue, compass, pricking iron, mallet, sharp awl, round awl, sewing clamp, hammer, edge dye, bee’s wax, burnishing iron, and wax cloth… just to name a few.

Throughout each course, our students have the opportunity to purchase various leather crafting tools.

 

Our Program

The first 9 months consist of the Beginner, Intermediate, and Advanced Courses. They have been designed to teach the ins and outs of working with leather exclusively by hand. The last 3 months is an introduction to using machinery and the handwork you have mastered, together. Please note that this program consists of projects done at your own pace. The amount of pieces created by the end of the course will depend on the individual.

Beginner Class
In this class, you will be introduced to working with leather purely by hand. You will learn about the essential tools needed to work with leather, pattern making, cutting, assembling, stitching, and hand finishing. By the end of this course you will have created 6 different wallets with progressive pattern making and assembling techniques. online enrollment

Intermediate Class
This class will be building on what you have learned from the beginner course. We will move onto larger projects. You will learn about the basic bag structure, additional stitching & finishing techniques, and construction techniques for 2 gussets, 3-sided gussets, and credit card pockets. You will have the opportunity to make a medium size accessory item and two bags. With each project you will learn a different technique and process. The pieces will be your own designs with certain guidelines & parameters. online enrollment

Advanced Class
You will learn to master more complicated designs, incorporating all learned aspects from the beginning and intermediate courses. You will learn more advanced construction techniques such as piping, binding, and rope handles. You will also be introduced to hand skiving techniques. The pattern making will focus on more intricate patterns. By the end of this class, you will know how to cut patterns, assemble and finish more complicated bags. online enrollment

Master Class
You will learn to master more advanced designs, incorporating all learned aspects from the beginning, intermediate, and advanced courses. You will learn construction using basic sewing machine techniques and be introduced to machine skiving. The pattern making will focus on more avant-garde patterns that will require you to use our most advanced tools, including the hand skiver and sewing machine, as well as new techniques like folded edges and double stitching. By the end of this class, you will have learned how to completely design your own bag from concept to finished project. The bags you create will be uniquely your own. online enrollment

Tuesday Evening Drop-In Class
In this class, you will be introduced to working with leather purely by hand. You will learn about the essential tools you will need to work with leather, pattern making, cutting, assembling, stitching, and hand finishing. You will have the opportunity to create 6 different wallets. By completing all 6 wallets, you will have learned the basic patternmaking and assembling techniques taught in the beginner course.
